Since 2013, I have been working as a freelance ecological consultant, trading as Feàrna Ecology.
Feàrna is the Gaelic word for the alder tree Alnus glutinosa. It will come as no surprise, therefore, that I'm a botanist. I carry out vegetation surveys (supplemented with simple walkover surveys for protected species when necessary), draw survey maps in Quantum GIS, write management plans for protected sites, train volunteers and can also carry out some practical management tasks on protected sites.
I bring to this consultancy 13 years' experience of working as an Area Officer for Scottish Natural Heritage as well as carrying out 20 Wildlife Site surveys for the Scottish Wildlife Trust. I also worked for the Dartmoor National Park Authority for 5 years, and have taught ecological fieldwork for the Field Studies Council.
I carry public and products liability insurance to the value of £5 million and professional indemnity to the value of £500,000. My cover is with Hiscox Insurance, policy number HU PI6 1935963 (1).
Contact me if you need any of the following:

I am also planning to offer "Brown and Shepherd" style bird surveys in the near future. Watch this space for updates!
